Oh no, not MINE. "Great Poppy" as he’s known to my children, but "Poppy" as Jo knew him growing up. He turns 90 on the 11th, and in celebration I thought I’d post some pics and tell you about him a bit.

I’ve got a new phone, for FREE turns out, and it’s one of those that does EVERYTHING IN THE UNIVERSE, so I set the timer and take pictures that are better than my normal camera (the one I bought in ‘04, so go figure).
So with a timer, Pop wasn’t quite ready yet. Plus, he was readying for his tee shot and didn’t hear me say "Cheese!"

Without 20-minutes of stretching, my back’ll give out by hole #7, so this is on the 8th and I’m still going strong. I was just off the green in one shot, and then spent the next FIVE trying to get that little f***ing hole.

Here’s Pop. This is on the 7th hole, where I blasted my driver to within 4 feet of the green. Pop hit his ball about 50 metres and, if I’m going to be honest with you, never really hits it farther than that. It took him 4 shots to get to the green where I was in one shot.
And it took him one shot to putt it 15 feet and in. It took me 3, including one that hit the inside lip of the cup and spat back out.
This happens a lot you know.
For a Record-Breaking 5th Time in a Row, he’s beaten me by 2 shots. When I played friggin’ great, and shot a 37, he played friggin’ greater, and shot a 35. When I was mediocre at a 40, he was mediocrish at a 38. When I was bad with a 45, he was baddish with a 43.
Today I flubbed the tee shot on 2 holes and had two disastrous 3-putts, giving me a 43.
Yep, you guessed it. He flubbed 2 tee shots and put TWO in the water on the 2nd hole… and beat me with a 41.
I wish I was making this up, I really do, but I have to say that I have no small amount of pride in saying, "My 90-year old grandfather-in-law beats me by two strokes at golf!"
Good onya Pop, may you continue to confund me until you’re 100.
But ONLY until then, because by then I’m going to start playing once a week and I’ll surely find a way to beat you.

Just wanted to share the beauty, joy and simplicity in a child’s hand-drawn card:

In case you’re wondering, and I know well enough that you ARE, that’s Calvin, from Calvin & Hobbes, on the right, and Four-Arms, from Ben 10, on the left.
Oh, and Snake Eyes, from G.I. Joe, on the bottom (black) and a blue guitar on the far right. Plus, a Ben 10 logo in the "A" and other assorted places on the card.
That’s some talent, and definitely deserves that place of honour on the vaunted Cork Board of Important Stuff.
Take care all, Father’s Day Wishes if you’re in Oz, happy… um… happy Labor Day? Bah, Happy Day! Even if it’s just a Monday.
